San Ramon
<<< Back
This semi-urban community sits at the foot of the San Salvador Volcano in the town of Mejicanos. San Ramon was the site of intense fighting during the civil war in El Salvador from 1980-1992 and memories of the war are still vivid for many of the community members. Also present is a community desire to unite and move forward. Various community groups in San Ramon work to ensure basic human rights while others work with community empowerment and local development projects.
Four Salvadoran women have run the soy project in San Ramon for over 15 years with the financial assistance and community support of Maryknoll Lay Missioners. These women possess incredible spirits and are courageous leaders. They are experts in the production of soy milk and healthy soy based foods, group leaders at various community events and all in all, amazing women. The project serves children and their families as well as the elderly of the community on a daily basis while providing frequent workshops for women.
ConnectEd provided seed funding and support for the now self-sufficient community restaurant, computer lab and internet cafe in San Ramon. The women continue to spearhead this project in order to promote nutrition and, more recently, computer literacy in their communities. ConnectEd has assisted in recent years as the women piloted a new business model to sustain their subsidized nutrition program by opening a community restaurant and internet cafe. Not only have the restaurant and internet cafe provided them with a sustainable way to continue their work, but ConnectEd provided funding at a critical financial point, allowing these women to continue their vital service to the community. The work of the staff helps provide basic nutrition to over 100 families in need, encourages community participation, and empowers local women through education. We are proud to have helped such a successful, important program continue.
